Types of Tummy Tucks: Surgical Details
We offer different types of tummy tucks to cater to various concerns. Here’s an overview:
Designed for patients with both upper and lower abdominal skin laxity and muscle separation (diastasis recti), this comprehensive procedure tightens the muscles and removes excess skin to create a flat and fit tummy.
Perfect for individuals with good muscle tone but excess skin, this tummy tuck eliminates sagging skin above and below the belly button without suturing the muscles.
A mini tummy tuck is a procedure that specifically targets the lower abdomen. It is designed for individuals who have excess skin in that area, such as a pouch over a c-section or abdominal scar, or unwanted stretch marks. Unlike a full tummy tuck, the incision for a mini tummy tuck is generally shorter and does not involve cutting around the belly button. During the procedure, the tissues of the lower abdomen are lifted and excess skin is removed, resulting in a smoother and more toned appearance.
An extended tummy tuck is similar to a full tummy tuck, but with a longer incision that extends to the back. This procedure is suitable for patients who have significant sagging skin not only on their abdomen but also on their sides. Many of our patients who opt for an extended tummy tuck have experienced significant weight loss or have undergone previous weight loss surgery. In addition to tightening the skin, an extended tummy tuck also involves tightening the muscles and abdominal wall, addressing any laxity caused by weight fluctuations, and giving a modest lift to the outer thighs and buttocks.
A revision tummy tuck is a procedure performed on patients who have previously undergone tummy tuck surgery or a similar procedure. This could be due to incomplete or failed abdominal muscle tightening, unsatisfactory scarring, or residual excess skin in the abdomen or pubic area. Dr. Diaz specializes in revision tummy tucks, including cases where the belly button positioning appears unnatural or when patients have experienced weight gain or pregnancy after their initial tummy tuck. Challenging cases involving complications from previous liposuction are also within Dr. Diaz’s expertise. These revisions require careful planning and extensive experience to address complex anatomical changes and scar tissue.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Timeline
Dr. Diaz and her team provide personalized care throughout the recovery process, ensuring that each patient feels supported and receives the best possible outcome.
After waking up peacefully in the recovery room, Dr. Diaz’s patients experience minimal pain. Our nurses administer post-op medication, monitor vitals and drains, and assist patients in walking. Surprisingly, patients are encouraged to start walking on the first night after surgery.
During this visit, Dr. Diaz and her staff examine the surgical site, review instructions, and address any concerns. Most patients report little to no pain and require only over-the-counter pain relief such as Tylenol. Mild swelling may be present, and patients wear comfortable compression garments. Walking is done with a slight bend to alleviate pressure on the back. At this early stage of recovery, patients may need assistance getting out of bed, perform gentle walks, eat light and healthy meals, and stay hydrated.
At this stage, patients regain energy, and their incisions and surgical sites begin to heal. They can stand almost straight, and during the one-week post-op visit, Dr. Diaz determines the level of standing that is safe for each patient. Drains are removed or significantly reduced, ensuring patient comfort. Although most patients feel close to normal, it is important to continue taking it easy, engaging in only gentle walks.
Patients are nearing full healing at the two-week mark. They can stand up straight. For those who have traveled from out of town or the country, it is safe to fly back home. Some residual swelling may still be present, but patients can already appreciate their new tight and flat tummy. Incisions have healed and become thin, and scar treatments will begin.
At one month, patients feel strong enough to resume all daily activities, attend social functions, and engage in light exercises like walking. Full exercise routines can be resumed after six weeks of recovery. Patients who have had hernia repairs should wait three months before doing sit-ups, planks, or crunches. Incisions appear thin and healed, and the tummy is flat and tight. Scar treatment continues with the use of special silicone strips for six weeks.
By the three-month mark, patients can fully enjoy their flat and tight tummy, free from bulges. Clothes fit better, waistlines are smaller, and confidence soars. Patients report feeling stronger, experiencing improved exercise performance, no more back pain, and a stronger core. Incisions have faded and are barely noticeable. The three-month post-operative visit includes a review of before and after photos, allowing patients to witness their incredible transformation. Scar treatment continues with silicone gel application.
At six months, the remarkable results of the surgery are fully visible. Patients enjoy a greatly improved body shape, with no bulging or excess skin. The incision is thin and fading, contributing to a sense of confidence and strength.
At the one-year mark, the incision has faded into a thin white line. Patients thoroughly enjoy their new tight and fit figure, appreciating the long-lasting results of their tummy tuck surgery.
