Common Issues Encountered
Our expert surgeon, with extensive experience in revision tummy tucks, has identified the most common issues encountered after a previous tummy tuck or mini-tummy tuck surgery:
- Irregular abdominal wall tightening
- Umbilical float (when the belly button is pulled too low)
- High, wide, or irregular scars
- Dog ears (excess skin at the incision site)
- Unattractive belly button
- Hanging mons pubis (fatty tissue above the pubic area)
- Excess skin above the belly button
- For liposuction, the most prevalent concerns are over-aggressive techniques leading to irregularities and excess skin.
What to Expect Before Your Revision Tummy Tuck
To ensure the best possible outcomes, we will begin with a thorough consultation. During this session, we will assess the operative notes from your previous tummy tuck and evaluate any irregularities or abnormalities. Your desired results will be taken into consideration while determining if the effects of your prior surgery can be corrected. Our surgeon will conduct a comprehensive evaluation, including a detailed medical history, physical examination, and discussions about your aesthetic goals. Age, overall health, emotional well-being, and surgical expectations are crucial aspects that will be carefully considered.
At our office, honesty and transparency are our top priorities. If it is determined that a revision tummy tuck is not feasible or beneficial for you, our expert surgeon will guide you through alternative options. However, if you are an ideal candidate for a revision tummy tuck, we will work closely with you to create a personalized surgical plan and schedule a date for your procedure.
Recovery & Results
Dr. Diaz and her team provide personalized care throughout the recovery process, ensuring that each patient feels supported and receives the best possible outcome.
I have developed a gentle revision tummy tuck technique with minimal pain and a quick recovery. Following the surgery, you may experience tightness in your abdomen, but it should not be painful. In most cases, Tylenol is sufficient to manage any discomfort. While you will be given prescription pain medication, I encourage patients to use Tylenol instead, as prescription pills often result in constipation and bloating.
For the first two weeks after your revision tummy tuck, you will need to walk bent over, and you may experience swelling of the tissues. To support optimal healing, I recommend wearing a binder around the abdomen. This compression garment should be worn for six to eight weeks. Some patients may also have surgical drains in place for the first one to two weeks, depending on individual needs.
It is important to wait at least two weeks before returning to work or normal activities. During this time, keep physical exertion to a minimum. After about one month, you can gradually increase your activity level, resuming normal activities without anything strenuous. However, it is crucial to avoid direct impact to the abdominal area.
At the six-week mark, you can begin exercising and engaging in more vigorous activity. Still, caution must be exercised to protect the abdominal area. Once I remove your abdominal binder, you will finally be able to see the results of your surgery. Please note that it may take up to a year for scars to fade completely with proper scar treatment.
I also pay great attention to detail to create natural-looking contours and a thin, nearly invisible low scar with no bunching, irregularities, or step-offs. I take pride in ensuring the best possible outcome for each patient. Revision tummy tuck scars typically take about 12 months to fade. Scar treatments will begin around two weeks after your surgery, and I will provide you with detailed care instructions and scar medications.
